Nissan Patrol Generations

Nissan Patrol 2014 (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021), 5st generation

Nissan introduced the Patrol lineup in 2014 and made several updates, especially to its exterior. The design team tried hard to make the Patrol Y62 look sleeker, but it was like trying to change the shape of a brick with nail polish. Somehow the new bumper, bent upward toward the headlights, was realized. It’s new LED daytime running lights and a massive three-piece chrome grille, which was impressive and reminiscent of previous Patrol models. The air intakes on the sides of the front fenders were elongated. Inside, it was just as big a barge for up to eight people with an impressive ceiling height even for versions with a sunroof. The automaker made the interior with luxurious finishes such as heated and cooled leather seats, wood trim and an infotainment system borrowed from the Infiniti team. Under the hood, Nissan installed only V8 gasoline engines. Their fuel efficiency was wasted, but their performance was remarkable, especially for a full-featured version with a Mercedes-Benz 7-speed automatic transmission (dual-clutch).

Nissan Patrol 2010 (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014), 4st generation

The model has grown in size and offers more room for its passengers. Thanks to its renowned reliability, the old 5.6-liter engine offered with the previous generation was still on the list alongside the newer VK56VD unit which has more power thanks to direct gasoline injection and is available with the new 7-speed automatic transmission. This modern drivetrain is also used by its sister model, the Infiniti QX56. All models are assembled in Japan at three different facilities.

Nissan Patrol LWB 2010 (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014), 3st generation

While the Patrol was designed and used mostly in the harshest environments on Earth, the manufacturer didn’t forget to install comfortable suspensions and work on its styling. The rounded edges, big headlights, and in-bumper rear taillights were one of the features of the Patrol Y61. Inside, there was seating for up to seven passengers for the five-door version, while the three doors featured only five. To improve the inside comfort, the rear suspensions were fitted with coil springs instead of leaf-springs as other off-road vehicles on the market. The Patrol featured amenities such as climate control, leather seats, in-car entertainment units, and sunroof.

Nissan Patrol LWB 1998 (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004), 2st generation

Despite its size, the long-wheelbase Patrol tried to look civilized. The carmaker designed it with shaved edges and rounded body panels. Despite its new shape, it couldn’t be subtle in the five-door version (actually six). It was still tall and long, hard to drive in town. Its four side doors made the ingress and egress easier for up to seven passengers. It featured two side-hinged, unequal-length doors, and the longer one sported the spare wheel. The cabin offered room for five occupants, with an option for seven with two folding seats in the trunk area. At the front, Nissan spoiled the occupants with wide, comfortable seats divided by a tall center console where the carmaker added a storage compartment and a large ashtray. On the center stack, the carmaker installed a standard AC unit and a stereo-cassette player.

Nissan Patrol SWB 2004 (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010), 3st generation

The Patrol regenesis saw a refreshed car with new underpinnings and a completely restyled body. Slightly larger than previous generation models, the new Patrol was powered by an improved 4-cylinder 3.0 Liter Turbodiesel unit with a power output of 160 hp and 380 Nm of max torque, ensuring great pulling capacity. Live axles haven’t been given yet up with the Patrol sporting an even sturdier suspension system, the same which made it a popular choice, among others, for off-roaders. Equipment levels were also raised, broadening the customer’s range of choices which included the XE, SE and LE trims and their variations.

Nissan Patrol SWB 1998 (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004), 2st generation

Nissan designed the fifth-generation Patrol to look like a civilized car. It was still big, but its sharp corners and flat panels were gone. The three-door version (four to be exact) was shorter and easier to live with in the city. It was shorter than the compact sedan, but wider and definitely taller. Its wide door allowed passengers to climb aboard, and Nissan installed two unequal length doors with side hinges in the rear. There were five seats in the cabin, but there was little room for the rear passengers despite the car’s exterior dimensions. On the center console, the automaker installed standard air conditioning and a cassette stereo. The most important part of the Patrol’s success was under the body. Its curved, rugged chassis was the perfect platform for serious off-roading. Nissan used drive axles both front and rear with adjustable anti-roll bars, which combined with coil springs at all angles increased suspension travel. The automaker offered the Patrol a wide range of engines, both gasoline and diesel, depending on country and region. High and low transfer gearboxes were standard on the entire lineup.
