The ILSAC GF-1 standard indicates the oil meets both API SH and the Energy Conserving II (EC-II) requirements. It was created in 1990 and upgraded in 1992 and became the minimum requirement for oil used in American and Japanese automobiles.
ILSAC GF-2 replaced GF-1 in 1996. The oil must meet both API SJ and EC-II requirements. The GF-2 standards requires 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40, 5W-50, 10W-30, 10W-40 and 10W-50 motor oils to meet stringent requirements for phosphorus content, low temperature operation, high temperature deposits and foam control.
An ILSAC GF-3 an oil must meet both API SL and the EC-II requirements. The GF-3 standard has more stringent parameters regarding long-term effects of the oil on the vehicle emission system, improved fuel economy and improved volatility, deposit control, and viscosity performance. The standard also requires less additive degradation and reduced oil consumption rates over the service life of the oil.
ILSAC GF-4 is similar to the API SM service category, but it requires an additional sequence VIB Fuel Economy Test (ASTM D6837).
Introduced in October 2010 for 2011 and older vehicles, designed to provide improved high-temperature deposit protection for pistons and turbochargers, more stringent sludge control, improved fuel economy, enhanced emission control system compatibility, seal compatibility, and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85.
The ILSAC GF-6 specification is currently in development and will probably be divided into two sub-specifications. ILSAC GF-6A will be fully backward compatible with ILSAC GF-5 but would offer better fuel economy, better engine protection, and improved performance while maintaining durability. ILSAC GF-6B would deliver a similar performance as ILSAC GF-5A but will allow lower viscosity oils like xW-16, taking advantage of the fuel economy benefits offered by the new SAE 16 viscosity grade.

The MPV offers hand-opening doors on the driver and passenger sides, but for $800 you can relax, press a button on the key fob and enjoy power door opening on each side. By the way, dual power doors are a new option for the LX. Another nice feature of the ES is the folding tabletop between the driver’s and passenger’s seats with cup and coin holders.

In 2002, the Mazda MPV was modestly upgraded with more power. The last version got a more powerful 3.0 liter engine with 200 horsepower. It’s pretty peppy and, with the new five-speed automatic transmission, yields impressive fuel economy numbers of 18 miles per gallon in the city and 24 on the highway.

Mazda’s 2000 upgraded front-wheel-drive minivan received some equipment in 2001. Three versions are offered: the base DX, the mid-range LX, and the top-of-the-line ES. Sales more than doubled during 2001, but the MPV is still among the moderately popular minivans. The LX gets remote keyless entry in 2001, as well as a three-in-one audio system that includes cassette and CD players. All models are equipped with child seat belt anchors. All MPV models are equipped with a 2.5-liter V-6 engine with two overhead camshafts, 170 horsepower and a four-speed automatic transmission. The engine was developed by Ford, Mazda’s parent company.

They seemed rather soft and fuzzy, but they stopped the car at a reasonable distance. The four-speed automatic overdrive shifted smoothly and quickly. The MPV is replete with clever innovations, one of which is the second-row seating arrangement. The starboard side, configured as a captain’s chair, can slide left and right as well as forward and backward. Both seats can be removed to carry cargo. The new MPV has double sliding doors that integrate perfectly into the body, even when sliding. They moved easily on level ground and were not too difficult for the fragile, even on a slope. Instead of the usual fixed windows, these doors have windows that actually lower, actuated electrically on the top two series, with manual operation on the DX.
