ILSAC GF-1

The ILSAC GF-1 standard indicates the oil meets both API SH and the Energy Conserving II (EC-II) requirements. It was created in 1990 and upgraded in 1992 and became the minimum requirement for oil used in American and Japanese automobiles.

ILSAC GF-2

ILSAC GF-2 replaced GF-1 in 1996. The oil must meet both API SJ and EC-II requirements. The GF-2 standards requires 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40, 5W-50, 10W-30, 10W-40 and 10W-50 motor oils to meet stringent requirements for phosphorus content, low temperature operation, high temperature deposits and foam control.

ILSAC GF-3

An ILSAC GF-3 an oil must meet both API SL and the EC-II requirements. The GF-3 standard has more stringent parameters regarding long-term effects of the oil on the vehicle emission system, improved fuel economy and improved volatility, deposit control, and viscosity performance. The standard also requires less additive degradation and reduced oil consumption rates over the service life of the oil.

ILSAC GF-4

ILSAC GF-4 is similar to the API SM service category, but it requires an additional sequence VIB Fuel Economy Test (ASTM D6837).

ILSAC GF-5

Introduced in October 2010 for 2011 and older vehicles, designed to provide improved high-temperature deposit protection for pistons and turbochargers, more stringent sludge control, improved fuel economy, enhanced emission control system compatibility, seal compatibility, and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85.

ILSAC GF-6

The ILSAC GF-6 specification is currently in development and will probably be divided into two sub-specifications. ILSAC GF-6A will be fully backward compatible with ILSAC GF-5 but would offer better fuel economy, better engine protection, and improved performance while maintaining durability. ILSAC GF-6B would deliver a similar performance as ILSAC GF-5A but will allow lower viscosity oils like xW-16, taking advantage of the fuel economy benefits offered by the new SAE 16 viscosity grade.

Mercury Mariner Generations

Mercury Mariner 2008 (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011), 3st generation

The 2008 Mariner featured larger headlights and a smaller but taller grille. The boxy shape remained, but the embossed grille and rounded corners made it more attractive. The power-assisted hood had a reverse crease, which improved the overall appearance of the car. At the rear, the new taillights had four interior lenses and a clear bulb with a red interior lens. Inside, the Mariner offered a variety of upholstery options depending on trim level. In the Premiere trim, two-tone leather upholstery with alcantara in the middle and black exterior trim gave the interior a chic look. A larger center console was installed with a huge compartment that could easily fit a laptop computer. A new infotainment unit was placed on the center console. The instrument panel has also been redesigned and displays clear information. Like its non-facelifted counterpart, the Mariner had front-wheel drive as its base configuration. But the engine was upgraded from 2.3-liter to 2.5-liter. It was paired as standard with a 5-speed manual transmission. The other engine available was the 3.0-liter, which was increased to 240 hp, 40 hp more than its predecessor. It was standardly mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and was available with front- or all-wheel drive. A hybrid version was also available.

Mercury Mariner 2007 (2007, 2008), 2st generation

Launched in 2005 on the same platform as the Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute, the Mariner was marketed as a premium product in the compact SUV segment. A year later, it was upgraded with a small facelift in the 2007 model. On the outside, the car received some visual improvements. The new satin-branded waterfall grille was bolder than on the non-facelifted version. Changes were also made to the headlights. There was a new hood and a raised beltline. The B-pillar was covered with a tinted molding. At the rear, the tailgate was redesigned, and the taillights received clear glass over the bulbs. Inside, the Mariner offered a variety of upholstery options, depending on the trim level. In the Premiere trim, two-tone leather upholstery with alcantara in the middle and black exterior trim gave the interior a chic look. The dashboard was available in monochrome or two-tone, depending on trim level.

Mercury Mariner 2004 (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007), 1st generation

The Mercury Mariner was positioned as a premium car, even though it was based on the Escape. But unlike its blue-oval brother, the Mariner had a more stylish look and was equipped with better features. Outside, the chrome grille with vertical slats between the headlights gave the odd impression of a fence. Straight A-pillars were typical of a better SUV, but the standard Mariner only came with front-wheel drive. The boxy look of the car was a far cry from the look of a station wagon, and that was a good thing for a premium SUV. Inside, the Mariner was praised for its spacious interior with five seats. Its long wheelbase provided good legroom for rear passengers. In its basic configuration, called Convenience, the Mariner was equipped with cloth seats, but in the top trims, Luxury and Premiere, leather seats were fitted as standard as well as optional. The large trunk was one of the biggest in its class. Under the hood, the Mariner started with a 153-horsepower four-stroke engine mated to a standard 4-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The 3.0-liter V6 was available with front- or all-wheel drive. There was also a hybrid version, which featured better fuel efficiency.
