Kia Niro Generations

Kia Niro 2019 (2019, 2020, 2021), 4 generation

Kia decided to give the successful 2019 Niro Hybrid compact crossover a facelift early in the mid-cycle, with the model receiving many exterior and interior upgrades along with improved technology features. As part of the extensive design update, the car now features new projection-type headlights and fog lights, a redesigned diamond-shaped grille and chevron-shaped LED daytime running lights on the front. At the rear, there’s a new fake safety plate that’s wider and more pronounced, giving the car a bolder, off-road-ready look, as well as a new combined LED taillight design. Inside, the modifications are even more extensive, with a 7-inch instrument cluster redesigned along with a standard 8-inch touchscreen display on the center console.

Kia e-Niro 2018 (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021), 3 generation

Joining the existing lineup of hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the vehicle, the e-Niro is the first all-electric crossover Kia has ever produced. With an overall design inspired by the 2018 Niro EV concept, the e-Niro is also Kia’s second global electric vehicle after the Soul EV and aims to steal sales from other established electric vehicles. At launch, the Kia e-Niro will be available with two power outputs and two different sized batteries, respectively. The standard model features a 39.2 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery that provides a range of up to 312 km (193 miles) on a single charge in a combined WLTP cycle, while the battery pack is paired with a 136-horsepower engine that develops 395 Nm (291.3 lb-ft) of torque. The larger battery is a 64 kWh lithium-ion polymer unit that is paired with a 204 hp engine with the same torque as its little brother. Thanks to the increased battery capacity, the range is more than 485 km (301 miles) on the WLTP cycle. Both versions are front-wheel drive only.

Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid 2018 (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021), 2 generation

After introducing the Niro Hybrid in 2017, Kia stepped up and launched a plug-in hybrid version for its compact crossover in 2018. On the outside, it was the same crossover as the regular model. It was taller than the regular station wagon, but not as tall as a minivan or SUV. The “tiger nose” grille worked well on the Niro, especially since it was blended with angular headlights resembling a pair of tiger eyes. On the right front fender, a cover covered the charging port, a major difference from its hybrid counterpart. At the rear, the automaker hid the exhaust of the combustion engine behind the bumper. Inside, the spacious interior was similar to the regular Niro for the most part. Its blue accents around the vents and nice trim gave the impression of a premium car. It wasn’t up to Audi standards, but it was above the cee’d. Inside, there was plenty of room for five adults and a large trunk in the back. However, storage capacity was reduced compared to its brethren because of the larger battery. Under the hood, the Kia used the same 1.6-liter atmospheric engine, aided by an electric motor. Total power was 141 hp, and the powertrain sent torque to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission (dual-clutch).

Kia Niro 2016 (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), 1 generation

The 2016 Kia Niro was a true crossover, unveiled in February 2016 at the Chicago Auto Show. The car was designed with a low roof line and short overhangs to maximize the wheelbase and thus offer more interior space. The aerodynamic drag coefficient of the subcompact crossover SUV was only 0.29, which is unusual for cars in this class. Inside, the car featured a concise dashboard and clean, informative instrumentation. A large wheelbase of 2,700 mm (106.3 inches) allowed for good interior space. The elevated seat, typical of a crossover, gave it more head and legroom. The engine was a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline unit with Atkinson cycle technology, assisted by a 43-hp electric motor. The whole system was connected to a six-speed automatic transmission with double clutch.
