Hyundai Azera Generations

Hyundai Azera 2017 (2017), 12 generation

There are no significant changes.

Hyundai Azera 2016 (2016), 11 generation

The Limited trim level gains adaptive cruise control with stop/start capability and an electronic parking brake.

Hyundai Azera 2015 (2015), 10 generation

Hyundai has restyled the front and rear of the Azera and added new standard features like a blind spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert, illuminated doorsill plates, hands-free automatic trunk opening and a navigation system with an 8-inch screen. The center dashboard control panel has been revised.

Hyundai Azera 2014 (2014), 9 generation

All Azera models get Hyundai Assurance Connected Care emergency communication system. The Azera lineup now consists of two trims: Base and Limited, with the latter including a navigation system and power-folding side mirrors.

Hyundai Azera 2013 (2013), 8 generation

The Azera has nine standard airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag, two front airbags, front and rear side torso airbags, and side curtain airbags for front and rear passengers. The Azera comes standard with a rearview camera that turns on as soon as you put the car in reverse (even if you have the radio/navigation screen off, unlike many cars). Rear parking assist sensors are included in the optional technology package. The Azera also features Hyundai Blue Link, which offers emergency roadside assistance, theft recovery, remote vehicle access, navigation assistance and traffic information.

Hyundai Azera 2012 (2012), 7 generation

Full-size sedan Hyundai Azera in 2012 has undergone serious changes. The 2012 Azera is a sleek, fastback sedan that owners will love to look at every day in their driveway. Others agreed; several of our editors noted compliments from passersby. Its downward sloping rear fascia and wide, low ride give the car an upscale look, slightly reminiscent of a Jaguar.

Hyundai Azera 2011 (2011), 6 generation

Interior changes for 2011 are minimal; most noticeable is the new faux-metal console trim, which has a decent textured finish. Unlike the Toyota Avalon, whose adventurous interior struck early and wasn’t fixed until this year, the Azera’s cabin is almost risk-free. It’s traditional and elegant, perfectly aged.

Hyundai Azera 2010 (2010), 5 generation

The Limited trim gains additional standard equipment for 2010.

Hyundai Azera 2009 (2009), 4 generation

The 2009 Azera gets a 3.3-liter or 3.8-liter V-6 engine. Like many other automatics in this class, the Azera’s standard five-speed automatic is as lazy as the rest. The strobing shift lever has a manual shift function, but a sport mode with a more aggressive shift mode is more useful. Many automatics offer this. Left to itself, the Azera transmission stubbornly resists downshifting for more power until you need it. It’s a nuisance in a number of situations, from accelerating into a corner to overtaking on the highway. Third gear offers powerful power from 40 to 60 mph, but it takes a concerted push on the gas pedal to trigger this shift. The finesse of economy is average torque – the 3.8-liter engine offers plenty – and that means there’s at least enough power even when the transmission stops in fourth or fifth gear.

Hyundai Azera 2008 (2008), 3 generation

New for 2008 is an optional navigation system supplied by electronics manufacturer LG. It’s the same as the one in the Santa Fe and Veracruz SUVs; the one in the ’09 Sonata is a separate system, my impressions of which you can read here. LG’s unit isn’t as pleasant to the touch: its buttons bend and wiggle like a climate control, and the usability is so-so. The zoom in/out controls are physical buttons, not on-screen buttons, and there are clever features like a route preview screen with step-by-step instructions. The LG unit comes with a 605-watt stereo system at a very reasonable price of $1,750; the navigation alone costs about $2,000 on Lucerne, Avalon and Taurus flights.

Hyundai Azera 2007 (2007), 2 generation

The Azera marks Hyundai’s first attempt to enter the luxury arena, offering an inexpensive sedan loaded to the brim with plush features and electronic equipment. The Hyundai Azera has an all-new 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine, a superb engine that delivers a sense of impeccable power with a silky purr. With continuously variable cam timing, dual overhead cams and all-aluminum construction, the 263 horsepower powerplant is impressive in this price range. The five-speed automatic transmission works flawlessly, with a well-integrated manual shift function.

Hyundai Azera 2006 (2006), 1 generation

The 2006 Hyundai Azera is a true luxury liner in the sedan segment. The new Hyundai Azera Limited comes standard with electronic stability control, traction control, eight standard airbags (including side curtain airbags), 17-inch alloy wheels, leather seats, power front seats, heated front seats, power rear sun visor, wood-trimmed steering wheel, door handles, steering wheel audio controls and auto-dimming headlights.
