How do we choose oils from this list?

We’ve reviewed dozens of synthetic oils to identify the top of the range depending on sales information, oil cleaning tests’ effectiveness, price, and our personal knowledge. We also asked car manufacturers for guidance because they won’t take risks with motor security. We asked them what engine oil they pour into their strongest high-efficiency motors. These motors need ultimate protection because they run with enormous internal stresses and possibly high oil temperatures that impair the quality of the lubricants.

How to choose engine oil for car

Motor oil over $20 (per 5 quart):

Fully synthetic motor oils have different prices, and it’s good to look for a product on sale if you would like a profitable deal. Some of them, like Castrol or Pennzoil, may cost just $25, while others: like Idemitsu can cost $40 or above.

Motor oil less than $20 (for 5 quarters):

Less costly motor oils are typically synthetic blends. The synthetic blends are a great option if you would like to gain some benefits of fully synthetic oil, but don’t like to waste a lot of money.

What is the frequency of oil changes?

For a long time, it was known that motor oil should be changed every 3000 miles. However, since then cars and oils have gone a long way. In most situations, you can drive between 5000 and 7500 miles confidently between oil changes. Synthetic oil can help you get even further by driving 10,000 to 20,000 miles. We recommend that you change the oil every 5000 miles.

To determine exactly when you need to change the oil, we recommend that you monitor it personally. New cars have an oil level control system, but you can always do it the old-fashioned way by checking the engine oil dipstick. The new oil looks light amber and will get darker over time. Check it every thousand miles until the recommended oil change interval. You will soon know which shade of dark brown means it is time for a change.

A key feature in the selection of engine oil

Engine oil viscosity

The engine oil viscosity is the basic characteristic by which the lubricating fluid is selected. It can be kinematic, dynamic, conditional, and specific. However, most often kinematic and dynamic viscosity parameters are used to select a specific oil. Their acceptable values are clearly specified by the vehicle engine manufacturer (usually two or three values are acceptable). The correct choice of viscosity ensures uniform engine performance with minimum mechanical stress, reliable coverage of parts, and smooth fuel consumption.

Vehicles receive a viscosity grade (thickness or consistency) which is based on a number of criteria including outside temperature, working temperature, and motor load. Most petrol motors are classified in viscosity grade 5W-30, 5W-20, and 0W-20, while diesel motors normally have viscosity grades of 15W-40 and 5W-40. The numbers represent how stable the motor oil is to thickening in cold conditions and to dilute at heat.

The most stable oils for winter weather are oils with a viscosity of 0W they freeze at -40 degrees, but you should remember that these oils are also the most fluid and not suitable for all engines, engine oils 0W-20 and 5W-20 are most commonly used in the Japanese and American cars. It is also worth mentioning that besides lubrication, the oil additionally cools the motor! The most durable oil to hot weather is the viscosity 50 and 60, it excellently removes extra heat and gets heated slower. That is why 5W-50 and 10W-60 oils can be used in sports cars.

The most versatile oils for use in both cold and warm times are 0W-40 and 0W-30. Most frequently such oils are used in German cars. For automobiles with greater engine wear, a thicker oil like 5W-40, 10W-40, and 10W-30 is needed.

Before buying the oil

You should always read the owner’s guide to determine what oil to use in your car. This covers familiarity with a grade that is often indicated by numbers like 0W-20 or 10W-30. You might also like to find out whether your car needs synthetic oil, something that is not unusual among high-performance and high-class cars. You may also wish to find out whether your car needs special diesel oil if it has a diesel engine. Most of the oils are versatile, however, there may be occasions when you will have to buy oil for motors with DPF.

DPF Performance

Starting in 2006, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) initiated the implementation of more stringent requirements for diesel fuel and diesel engine oils for use in road transport in an attempt to reduce vehicle pollution.

SAPS engine oil

Since the launch of DPF-compliant motor oils, manufacturers of engine oils have been required to control the levels of sulfates ash, phosphorus, and sulfur (SAPS) in the oil. Diesel engines fitted with a particulate filter should use an oil with a low SAPS level.

Low SAPS and Mid SAPS

SAPS is an abbreviation consisting of capital letters of the word combination Sulfated Ash, Phosphorus, and Sulfur, literally translated as sulfated ash, phosphorus, and sulfur. Accordingly, Low SAPS and Mid SAPS oils with low and medium content.
Thus, now almost all new gasoline cars sold are equipped with catalysts by default, and often already multi-stage. Some gasoline cars are equipped with GPF (Gasoline Particulate Filter) filters, by analogy with the well-known DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) filters on diesel engines. And what is more, already on some models of cars used systems with urea injection SCR.

Low SASP oil

Low SAPS oils include engine oils with sulfates ash content not exceeding 0.5 % m/m. Low SAPS oils include oils of ACEA C1 and ACEA C4 specification.

Mid SASP oil

Oils with an average SAPS content, include engine oils with the content of sulfates ash not exceeding 0.8% m/m. Mid SAPS oils are ACEA C2, ACEA C3, and ACEA C5 specification oils.

You should also be aware that oil filters are almost as important as the oil itself, helping to prevent damage to your engine by foreign objects.

Other features

Driving type: if you like to drive fast, own a sports car, or often tow or carry heavy loads in your car, you can use higher quality engine oil or oil specially designed for these types of tasks. For example, engines that are more stressed than the average car will work better with fully synthetic oil.

Additives

If you buy modern oil, most of them already contain antifoam additives, air conditioners, detergents, dispersants, corrosion inhibitors, viscosity index improvements, antioxidants, and antiwear additives. Therefore, we do not recommend adding additional additives to engine oil.
